Let's talk

Nottingham Festival of Words

The Brief.

The client brief on this project was very clear. They wanted to create a video that not only showed the range and variety of literature-related events, services and opportunities in Nottingham, but also the personality of the people involved. It was also essential for the film to show just how the city is richly served when it comes to literature, reading and creative writing. The video was intended to be used as part of the bidding process to become a UNESCO City of Literature. This was successfully achieved in December 2015.

The Solution.

Filming took place over two days in a number of venues and locations. Our objective was to capture a huge amount of footage so that every aspect of the festival and the people who were part of it. Some filming needed to be unobtrusive and almost 'fly-on-the-wall' style which, whilst challenging, provided some of the best material.

It was important to take time to talk to people and engage them in why the film was being made. This co-operation had a dual benefit. For us, it meant we got very natural footage of people whilst making them feel valued as contributors to the film.

great videos with us.

Working with Rich was a great experience. We made a video to summarise the Nottingham Festival of Words 2014. I had no experience of making films but do really enjoy the creative process and love working on a project such as this. Rich’s experience and skill showed through from beginning to end. He spent time with us to understand the brief, make excellent suggestions and filmed in a way that enabled people to relax and participate rather than feeling self-conscious and threatened by the camera’s presence. I worked with Rich at the editing stage too – he had hours of footage which he’d made first selections from and we were able to work as a team to get the right emphasis and balance in the final product – which was all delivered on time and budget too. Above all, I would recommend working with Rich as it was great fun – and I remain on the lookout for other projects (excuses) to work with him in the future!
